by Michael Burns of THOROUGHBRED TIMES (USA)

Latency, Argentina’s 2007 Horse of the Year, added to his impressive résumé as he rallied in the stretch to win the Gran Premio Copa de Honor - Copa Julio y Carlos Menditeguy (Arg-G1) on Saturday at Palermo.

Latency made his first start since finishing sixth to Life of Victory in the Gran Premio Internacional Carlos Pellegrini (Arg-G1) on December 13.

Under a patient ride from Julio Cesar Mendez, the seven-year-old Slew Gin Fizz horse overhauled runner-up Alghero in the closing strides to win by three-quarters of a length. Latency completed 2,000 meters (9.94 furlongs) in 2:02.39 on a track rated as good.

Longshot Calidoscopio finished third, well clear of Group 1 winners Inter Optimist and Reraise, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the nine-horse field.

With the victory, Latency may have earned a start in next month's Gran Premio Republica Argentina (Arg-G1) at Palermo.

Latency has amassed victories in many of South America’s most important races, including the Argentine classic Gran Premio Jockey Club (Arg-G1) in 2004, the Estrellas Classic (Arg-G1) in '05, and South America’s Gran Premio Latinoamericano in '06. He prevailed in South America’s marquee event, the Gran Premio Internacional Carlos Pellegrini, in 2007.

Latency tallied his eighth Group 1 victory and improved his record to 12 wins in 28 career starts.

Bred by Haras Las Dos Manos, Latency is out of the multiple stakes-winning El Asesor (Arg) mare Latencia.
